About this property

“A spacious studio apartment suffused with fine art deco detailing”

The apartment is positioned on the ground floor of the iconic Grade ii-listed 1930s mansion block in Shepherd’s Bush, The Grampians – a building that remains among the finest of its kind. Its interiors have been sensitively refurbished by the current owner under the expert guidance of Oliver Salway, founder of design studio Softroom. The result is an understated, restful scheme amplified by expansive original Crittall windows that frame superb views over a verdant inner courtyard.

    The Building

Originally designed by Maurice Webb in the art deco style, The Grampians was built between 1935-37. The designs for the block were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1935, and the building was Grade ii-listed in 2003.

The grand steel-framed building has walls of red-brown brick and Portland stone dressings on the front block. The façade is in an art deco/modern style, with classical references accentuated by the stepped-down roofline and two-storey curved shop projections. These flank the central entrance, stepping back in curves to form an impressive entrance court from the street. At the top of the building, above the central projection, are triple-arched openings with balustrades forming a Lutyens-like belvedere.

    The Tour

Entry is via a classical-style Gibbs surround with stylised keystones and two recessed double entrance doors. The doors open into an entrance lobby with a concierge’s office embellished with classical detailing, consistent in character with that of the front entrance, and lift and stair access to upper levels.

The apartment is on the ground floor, with street-level access from Shepherd’s Bush Road. The front door opens directly into an entrance hall, which leads to a bright studio room. Here, the interiors are a fine example of the development’s archetypal art deco and modernist composition: Richly pigmented pine parquet flooring runs underfoot, reflecting the play of light entering through a large west-facing Crittall window. Bespoke joinery and reflecting mirrors use the compact space to its best advantage.

Neatly tucked to one side is a modern kitchen with white cabinetry, solid wood worktops, and stainless-steel fixtures. There is ample storage, and appliances are integrated.

From the hall, an airy bathroom is complete with a shower over the bath, white-tiled walls and large grey tiles underfoot. A frosted-glass window draws in light while maximising privacy.

    The Area

Shepherd’s Bush, home to one of London’s Westfield centres, is within easy walking distance, as is White City, a little further north. The recently renovated Television Centre is at the heart of an exciting regeneration of the area, with independent restaurants such as Kricket, a cinema and the Soho House members’ club, White City House. Hammersmith riverside and its many destinations are a short walk to the south.

The Grampians is also close to Brook Green, a beautiful residential area renowned for its park activities and numerous outstanding schools. The Brook Green Market and Kitchen is a free-range and organic farmers’ market just a 10-minute walk away, running weekly on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings. The Anglesea Arms is an excellent local pub, while Farina & More and The Bird in Hand are two favourite neighbourhood Italian restaurants. C. Lidgates Butcher has been in the area for over five generations, and The Fishmongers Kitchen is a short walk away.

The apartment is well positioned with Piccadilly, Hammersmith & City, District, Overground and Central lines, all within a 10-minute walk. The nearest stations are Goldhawk Road, Shepherd’s Bush and Hammersmith. Holland Park, Notting Hill and central London are easily accessible by bus or tube. Easy access to the Westway provides a fast route out of London to the west, towards Heathrow Airport and the M4.
