What We Love
Spiral Cottage is a home that truly stands out. The property’s unique design, including its striking spiral staircase and curved door, showcases its architectural significance. The walled garden offers a private space for entertaining or relaxing, while the garage provides practical convenience.
Hedon itself is a thriving town located just seven miles east of Hull city centre. Known for its weekly market and rich history, the town offers a variety of shops, doctor’s surgeries, and excellent local schools, making it a great choice for families and professionals alike. The area is steeped in heritage, with St Augustine’s Church-often referred to as the "King of Holderness"-adding to the charm of the neighbourhood. Residents enjoy a friendly community atmosphere and easy access to both countryside and city amenities.
This property would suit buyers who appreciate character, history, and a home with a story to tell. Whether you’re looking for a family home or a unique space to make your own, Spiral Cottage offers a lifestyle that blends modern comfort with timeless appeal.
What the Owner Loves
We’ve loved living in Spiral Cottage-it’s a home full of character and history. The spiral staircase is a real talking point; on entering the house you are immediately impressed by the beautiful spiral staircase rising to the second floor by 29 steps! Being cantilevered from the walls it leaves an open well through the entire house. The slim elegant handrail takes two turns from the bottom to the top. Another unique feature is a curved door in the entrance hall, made to match the curve of the wall in the original lounge. The north side views of St Augustine’s Church which is directly opposite are stunning, especially at sunset, and the walled garden has been a wonderful space for summer gatherings. The house has been sympathetically restored to retain its original charm while adding modern touches, like the garden room extension, which has become one of our favourite spaces. Living in Hedon has been fantastic; the town has everything we need, and the community is so welcoming.
Built in 1840, it is Grade 2 listed and is of special architectural and historic interest under the Town and Country Planning Act. It was selected to be included in the Heritage Open Days 2025 and is arguably one of the most unique properties in Hedon. The house is known locally as 'the Dutch house' due to the impressive chimney stack built in the Dutch style. The property is updated and extended to a high standard with a perfect mix of contemporary and old.
