Architecture & Interior
The 1860s cleared the way for the redevelopment of the fields that once surrounded the Jesus Hospital Estate in Bethnal Green. Those distinctive, uniformly ordered rows of early Victorian terraces remain largely intact, forming a singular urban village around a quiet triangular green that now enjoys conservation area protection. The whole district sits on the very edge of the City; its calm streets offer a surprising contrast to the frenetic life only a stone’s throw away.
Sat within a small terrace of beautifully matched façades, this two bedroom house extends to just shy of 1,000 sq. Ft across two floors.
The light filled, open plan living space is the product of a sensitive historic intervention: Interior walls were removed to create a more practical layout which just works, yet nothing of the house’s character has been sacrificed. Wide, rusticated floorboards, shuttered sash windows and well preserved fireplace hearths affirm the period qualities and sit harmoniously alongside discreet modern additions.
Beyond the living area lies a traditionally proportioned galley kitchen, a familiar and functional feature of these houses which opens through to a glazed garden room that serves equally well as a calm home office or a private dining area.
On the first floor two generously proportioned bedrooms await, the principal room looking out over the street through a pair of large sash windows.
A generous, luxuriously appointed bathroom occupies the rear of the first floor, reached from the mid landing as you ascend the staircase.
To the rear, a quiet courtyard garden provides a private setting for intimate outside dining in the warmer months.
In the Neighbourhood
The reality of living here is that one quickly forgets quite how central one is; beyond the need for the occasional longer journey across town, almost everything one might hope to enjoy socially lies within easy reach on foot.
Jesus Green and Columbia Road Flower Market are so closely associated that they are almost invariably mentioned in the same breath. The weekly rhythm of the market on Sundays brings a beguiling energy to the area. Equally close are Broadway Market, Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market, and with the ever-evolving hospitality scene, there is a constant sense of independence and momentum. East London’s creative spirit remains very much alive, and it has lost none of its edge.
Transport & Connections
As with the benefits of the neighbourhood in terms of location, it’s much the same story with the transport connections. If you’re a city worker, there's little need for transport (unless it’s raining of course), The Square Mile is around 15 minutes on food. However, should your travels take you further then you’re a little spoilt for choice. Old Street (Northern Line) is about 10-15 mins on foot as well as Liverpool Street (Circle, District, Elizabeth Line & National Rail services) in around the same time. The London overline is approx. 10 mins
